Brass utensil maintenance calendar: a month-by-month rhythm

Five minutes weekly, one monthly inspection, seasonal deep care; the full year of brass maintenance on one page.

Brass care is not hard; it is rhythmic. Owners who struggle almost always lack the schedule rather than the technique. Here is the entire year, sized to print.

Every week (five minutes)

  • Hand wash with warm water and mild soap after use.
  • Towel dry inside and out, fully.
  • Leave open on the counter ten minutes before storing.

Monthly (two minutes)

  • Daylight glance at each lining. Grey and marked: carry on. Pale bare metal spreading across most of the base: plan a re-tin soon.
  • Quick wipe of shelf dust; dust holds moisture against metal.

Quarterly

  • Lemon-cloth pass on exteriors showing mineral spots or light tarnish, especially in hard-water homes.
  • Check handle pins with a gentle wiggle; snug any play before it becomes wobble.
  • Rotate stored pieces so nothing sits untouched for seasons.

Twice a year

  • Pre-festival deep clean before Diwali and your household's other big celebration: tamarind-and-ash rub on serving pieces, wash-and-dry only for lined cookware.
  • Honest cupboard audit: anything unused for six months either returns to service or gets gifted to someone who will use it.

Seasonal adjustments

Monsoon doubles drying vigilance and demands ventilated storage; towel drying becomes non-negotiable when air humidity does the work of zero. Dry winters loosen handle pins slightly more often. Coastal salt air wants monthly exterior wipes year-round.

The annual total

Roughly four hours of attention per piece per year, most of it the washing you would do anyway. That is the entire maintenance cost of cookware built to outlast you.
